Polyester / PET (Polyethylene terephthalate)
Polyester / PET is the most common thermoplastic polyester used worldwide. Many products that we use on a daily basis are made from Polyester / PET, such as the containers we drink from or the carpet we walk on. Polyester / PET is used to produce plastic resins and fibers that have widespread use in plastic containers, carpeting, textiles, films and laminates, foam construction materials, and high strength cord.
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) is a saturated, thermoplastic, polyester resin made by condensing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid (see scheme below).
Shepherd Widnes produces a variety of products that are used in the manufacturing of Polyester / PET throughout the world. For example, high purity Cobalt Acetate crystals are used in the manufacturing process of PET as a de-coloring agent to tint clear PET containers with a slight blue color.
Shepherd Widnes also produces a range of high purity metal salt solutions, including Manganese Acetate and Cobalt Acetate solutions or a combination of both, which are used in the production of PTA (purified terephtalic acid).
